Petition
We petition the Council of Hertsmere to take a balanced approach where plastic bags are concerned. They should not be banned, but positive action is needed to make them degradable.
Background information
Plastic bags are the most cost-effective way to transport goods and protect them from contamination. Alternatives to ordinary plastic bags often require a lot of energy and emit a lot of CO2 in their production. The only problem with ordinary plastic bags is that they can lie or float around for decades in the open environment. Symphony Environmental, a Hertsmere-based global company, has developed d2w oxo-biodegradable technology that converts ordinary plastic at the end of its useful life into a biodegradable material. The Council should use only oxo-biodegradable plastic and should encourage everyone to do the same.
